Kids take a trip back in time with this three-day summer day camp where they learn what life was like on the homefront during World War II and as a soldier. The camp is for students in grades 4-6. Limited space is available and camp fees do apply. Registration begins May 1.

Participants will learn how to make a bat house and then will take a nighttime tour of the Cemetery to watch nocturnal pollinators in action.  Ages 12 and up.  Meet at Cemetery Center at 7:00pm. There is a charge for this event.

In conjunction with Time Tracks 2010, we’re preparing for a landmark event! Help create mementos and keepsake items for inclusion in our Amazing Time Capsule, to be unveiled a decade later, in 2020.

It’s time to preserve history and predict the future; we need your help! Join us on August 28th to create several keepsakes for a time capsule to be reopened in ten years. Participate in filling up a banner of “What guests love about Amazement Square.” Be part of our photo album by having a picture taken of your family in their favorite area of the museum. Collaborate with us as we draw a mural of what the City of Lynchburg, including Amazement Square, will look like in 2020. Then decorate your own mini time capsule to bury in your backyard with a drawing of what you will be in ten years. We are so excited about this event and hope you will join us for the celebration finishing up at 3pm with the burying of our time capsule.

Point of Honor will host the 13th Annual Day at the Point on Saturday, October 2nd from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Admission is free. This fall festival brings living history, food, kid's games and crafts, music, and more to the grounds of Point of Honor each year. The historic home was built in 1815, by the Cabell family and is among the finest examples of Federal architecture in Piedmont Virginia.

On the first Saturday of each month, May through October, Historic Downtown Altavista will be host to hundreds of the region's most classic automobiles from the good ole' days. Mark Archaeology Month with an inside look at archaeology at Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest. Poplar Forest archaeologists will take visitors on special tours to view active excavation sites and the archaeology lab where artifacts are washed, mended, and labeled. The free tours are offered at 11:15 a.m., 12:15 p.m., 1:15 p.m., and 2:15 p.m.



House tours are available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with admission.



Poplar Forest is Thomas Jefferson's secluded plantation and retreat home, now a National Historic Landmark. Undergoing award-winning restoration and archaeology, Poplar Forest offers tours, special events, and school outreach programs. Poplar Forest is open April through November, Wednesday through Monday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Held the second full weekend in October, the annual Appomattox Railroad Festival commemorates the Norfolk & Southern railroad's donation of the Appomattox Depot to the Town of Appomattox. The two-day festival is held on Main Street and the surrounding downtown area. Festival highlights include a parade, craft vendors, live bands, train exhibits, food, fireworks and lots of activities for the entire family.

The Lynchburg Museum System invites you to tour the Lynchburg Museum within the Old Court House for free in honor of all who have served our country. FREE!!!

Take time to honor all who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces during this special ceremony. The program begins at 11am. Admission to the Memorial will be free from 10AM until noon, but guests are reminded to bring a chair for the program. The program includes music, guest speakers, and recognition of all veterans.

"First Saturday" in Altavista has been going on for many, many years on the "first Saturday" of each month at the Altavista Trade Lot. It's a gathering place for locals as well as a place for everyone to find that one-of-a-kind item you didn't even know you needed. Items range from clothing to tools to antiques to livestock!



When you finish at the trade lot, browse our unique shops for collectibles and art and much more, then enjoy a meal at one of our Main Street eateries.

The Lynchburg Museum in the Old Court House is now open for First Fridays with free admission from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. during the first Friday of each month. The Art Trolley will drop you off and pick you up at our front door at 901 Court Street as it makes its way between art galleries, studios, and other places of interest in Downtown Lynchburg. Please check our website as we will have a featured subject each First Friday complete with selected artifacts and a speaker.

Held annually on the first Sunday in December, Henry’s home is open to the public at no charge. Costumed docents give guided tours of the house and plantation buildings, decorated in traditional Christmas greenery. Period music and youth choral singing presented throughout the late afternoon. Christmas sweets and mulled cider are served from the plantation kitchen.

 

Point of Honor will host its 28th Annual Christmas Open House on December 5 from noon to 4:00 PM presenting one of Lynchburg's architectural jewels decorated for the holiday season as it would have been in the early 19th century. Point of Honor was built in 1815 by the Cabell family and is among the most elegant examples of Federal architecture in Piedmont Virginia. Join us for free admission, period music, refreshments, and special items on sale in our Gift Shop.

The historic Chapel will be open to the public and decorated for the holidays with natural greenery.  Enjoy cider and cookies and stay for the Holiday Concert at 3 p.m.
